Lake Baikal is a huge lake in Siberia, Russia. The lake is near Irkutsk. Baikal is about 636 kilometres long. It is the deepest lake on Earth. The lake has fish that exist only here and nowhere else. It is home to more than 1,700 species of plants and animals.
Baikal's age is 25–30 million years: it is one of the oldest lakes. Lake Baikal has over 1000 kinds of plants and 1550 kinds of animals. A lot of animals live near the lake. You can see bears, deer and seals there.
Baikal seals go by the name ‘Nepra’. They are the only species of seals that live in freshwater. They swim upstream a river and travel from one river to another. The seals get different colours at different times. Moments after birth, they are yellow-green colour and at the age of two weeks, they become white. Adults have silver-grey skin. The seals are usually from 1.2 metres to 1.4 metres long and weigh around 63–70 kilos. The males are bigger than females. The young seals are born in late winter or early spring and are 4 kg at birth and 65 cm long. They live for more than 50 years.
