The Commonwealth
Formerly known as the British Commonwealth of Nations, the Commonwealth is a loose association of former British colonies, dependencies and other territories - and Mozambique, which has no historical ties to Britain.

The modern Commonwealth has its roots in the 19th century, when the British Empire began to disintegrate. As some of its parts got varying degrees of independence from the motherland, a new constitutional definition of their relationship with each other had to be found.
The Commonwealth has no constitution or charter, but the heads of government of its member states hold Commonwealth Heads of Government Meetings (CHOGM) every two years to discuss issues of common interest.

As head of the Commonwealth, Queen Elizabeth II is recognised by its members as the "symbol of their free association". She attends the Commonwealth summits and the Commonwealth Games, which are held every four years. Also, on every Commonwealth Day, which is the second Monday in March, she broadcasts a message to all member countries.

The Commonwealth has been criticised for being a post-colonial club and for having little influence. But to its members it is a voluntary association of independent states which is in the business of promoting democracy, good government, human rights and economic development.
The fact that members share common traditions in many fields, including a common language, enables them to work together in an atmosphere of cooperation and understanding, strengthening even further the prestige of the Commonwealth.

Membership of the Commonwealth brings some practical benefits through the Commonwealth Fund for Technical Cooperation (CFTC). This is the main way in which the Commonwealth promotes economic and social development and reducing poverty.

A. The Hottest place in the World.
B. Mystery people.
C. Isn’t it great.
D. The biggest trees.
E. Death valley.
F. Rock art.
G. Fantastic plants.

1. Going to this place once meant danger and even death. It's the hottest place in the United States and summer temperatures there can reach 54 degrees C! Today, it is a national park and thousands of people drive there (in air-conditioned comfort, of course) to enjoy the beauty of this strange land.
There are lots of ghost towns in this place. In the 1800s people streamed here looking for gold and silver. The terrible heat combined with hard work made people leave the towns. Today, you can visit these eerie ghost towns and look inside old houses, prisons and banks to see how people lived back then.

2. The Redwood National Park in California is home to the oldest trees in the world. One of them, called General Sherman, is more than 3,000 years old. It's about 84m tall.
The Saguaro National Park in Arizona is the only place in the United States where you can find the magnificent saguaro cactus. It's one of the slowest-growing plants -it takes seventy-five years before it even grows its first branch!

3. The Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado is famous for its 'cliff dwellings'. The Anasazi Indians, who lived there over a thousand years ago, built many houses, both underground and on the tops of the cliffs. For some unknown reason, the Anasazi Indians disappeared suddenly and mysteriously in 1300 AD.

4. In the Capitol Reef National Park in Utah you'll see lots of beautiful cliffs. Many of them are covered with petroglyphs (rock carvings) and pictographs (rock paintings). They were made by the Fremont Indians, who -just like the Anasazi - mysteriously disappeared in 1300 AD.

5. It is one of the true natural wonders of the world. It makes up most of the Grand Canyon National Parkand millions of tourists visit it every year.
The Grand Canyon is over 320 km long and up to 6 km deep. The top and the bottom of the canyon have very different weather and vegetation. In fact, going from the top to the bottom is somewhat like going from Canada to Mexico. There are signs that people lived in the Grand Canyon 4,000 years ago.

  3. Like other sweet food, chocolate helps endorphins, natural hormones, that give us the feelings of pleasure and well-being, to appear in our body. Chocolate also makes us feel good by reacting with our brains. Scientists say that some people may develop chocoholism – a dependency on chocolate. So it\'s just possible that, with every bar of chocolate, your brain changes step by step in order to make you love chocolate more and more!

  4. Chocolate is made from the seeds of the tree Theobroma cacao. The ancient Aztecs used the beans of the cacao tree as a form of money. The Aztecs discovered that by crushing the beans into a paste and adding spices, they could make a refreshing and nourishing drink. This drink was very bitter, not like our chocolate drinks today. 16th century European explorers brought the drink back from their travels, added sugar, and soon it was popular as an expensive luxury.

Finding the perfect pet that suits you is not an easy decision. Most people's first thought would be to get a dog or a cat. They are both great pets, but remember that a dog needs many hours of your time. There are many other pets, such as fish or birds, but many never consider having a rabbit, especially inside their home. When I was a child my brother and I had a couple of rabbits in a hutch in the garden. Like many children we played with them for a period of time and soon they were only played with occasionally. I do look back and wish that we had given them more time, because in recent years I have come to realise how rewarding a rabbit can be. A friend of ours had a house bunny and we were amazed that they can be toilet trained, and if they are cleaned daily they never smell. Eventually we decided that we would get a rabbit which would be allowed to run freely around our home. Depending on the type of bunny you buy there are many different sizes. We chose a Holland Lop and named her Honey. Honey is now eighteen months old and is part of the family. She loves a routine, and her favourite treat is a piece of banana. She loves to be petted and cuddled. The noises that she makes when she is happy being stroked is like a cat purring; only it's actually her teeth chattering with delight. Have you ever heard of binking? Neither had we until we started reading about bunnies. Binking is when rabbits run around like mad things leaping in the air and frolicking about. It is so entertaining to watch them going crazy like this. I have seen that some people will take their rabbits out on leads, which is great for the bunnies but remember that if they venture outside that you have to beware of fleas, ticks and more importantly other animals attacking them. They can move fast, but fear stops them in their tracks, they will freeze out of fear. That's where the saying, ("Like a rabbit in the headlights!") comes from. Feeding your rabbit to keep him or her in the best of health will require 80% hay in their diet. Alfalfa is not the best type to get. Timothy Hay is the best, along with a small amount of pellets and fresh vegetables. Treats should be kept to a minimum. Hay in their diet is critical to their optimal health. Rabbits teeth will continue to grow and the way that a rabbit eats hay actually grinds down their teeth.

Rabbits will spend a good part of their day sleeping. They love to be around you and also love to play. Cardboard boxes, old books, paper and baby toys are great to keep your bunny amused. A playful rabbit is a happy contented one. Give them love and be loved in return. These lovable pets are well overlooked, but if you have the time they are really rewarding.

Roald Dahl is known as a British novelist, short story writer, fighter pilot and screenwriter.

His parents were from Norway, but he was born in Wales, 1916. The family used to spend the summer holidays on a little Norwegian island, swimming, fishing and going by boat. When Roald was four years old, his father died, so his mother had to organise the trip alone for herself and her six children.

At school, he was always homesick. At St. Peter's Prep School, all the letters home were controlled by the headmaster, and afterwards at Repton Public School, he had to wear a horrible school uniform [with braces, waist coat, hat and lots of buttons, all black]. The younger boys were often punished by the headmaster and the older boys called prefects. Roald lays much emphasis on describing the school-beatups in his book. You could get beaten for small mistakes like leaving a football sock on the floor, for burning the prefect's toast at teatime or for forgetting to change into house-shoes at six o'clock. The most terrible beatings, however, were given by the headmaster himself, who was also a clergyman. He was so cruel, that he made a pause after each beat to smoke his pipe and talk about sins and wrongdoing, while the boy had to remain kneeling. After ten beats, the victim was told to wash away the blood first, before putting on the trousers. By the way, this headmaster became later the Archbishop of Canterbury. Roald Dahl kept telling himself, that if this was one of God's chosen men, there was something going very wrong about the whole business.

After school, Roald Dahl didn't go to university, but applied for a job at the Shell company, because he was sure they would send him abroad. He was sent to East Africa, where he got the adventure he wanted: great heat, crocodiles, snakes and safaries. He lived in the jungle, learned to speak Swahili and suffered from malaria. When the second World War broke out, he went to Nairobi to join the Royal Air Force. He was a fighter pilot and shot down German planes and got shot down himself. After 6 months in hospital he flew again.

In 1942, he went to Washington as Assistant Air Attaché. There, he started writing short stories. In 1943, he published his first children's book "The Gremlins " with Walt Disney and in 1945 his first book of short stories appeared in the US. His marriage with the actress Patricia Neal was unhappy. None of their kids survived, his wife suffered a stroke. When she regained consciousness, she could hardly read, count and talk. But Roald managed to nurse her back to health, so that she could act again. Nevertheless, he got divorced in 1983 and married Felicity Crosland. He recieved several awards, such as the Edgar Allan Poe Award.

His collections of short stories have been translated into many languages and have been best-sellers all over the world. Among them are "Someone Like You ", "Sweet Mystery Of Life ", "Kiss Kiss " and "Roald Dahl's Book of Ghost Stories ". He wrote TV series like "Tales of the Unexpected " and the novel "My Uncle Oswald ".

His books are mostly fantasy, and full of imagination. They are always a little cruel, but never without humour - a thrilling mixture of the grotesque and comic. A frequent motif is, that people are not, what they appear to be. Mary Maloney in "Lamb to the Slaughter ", for example, is not a friendly widow, but a clever murderess. In his stories, the background is perfectly worked out: details are very close to reality.

Roald Dahl didn't only write books for grown-ups, but also for children, such as "James and the Giant Peach ", "Fantastic Mr. Fox " and "The Gremlins ". About his children's stories he said once: "I make my points by exaggerating wildly. That's the only way to get through to children." Roald Dahl is perhaps the most popular and best-selling children's book author. However, these stories are so sarcastic and humorous, that also adults appreciate reading them.

Roald Dahl died in November 1990. The Times called him "one of the most widely read and influential writers of our generation"
