King Alfred the Great

King Alfred is known as the only English monarch called "the Great". This Anglo-Saxon king (871–899) ruled during the time of constant Viking attacks. Alfred created a series of fortifications to surround his kingdom. He defended England against Danish invasion and founded the first English navy. He also contributed his ideas for better education and social order. Alfred  himself  was a scholar and translated Latin books into the Anglo-Saxon tongue.
