A bear looks slow and clumsy when it is at rest or walking leisurely. But donot be misled! For the bear is not clumsy; in fact, it is extremely active. Anyof the larger bears can overtake a running man, and, in spite of their greatweight, they can also climb trees. The Malayan bear, which lives in theforests of South-East Asia, is the best climber of them all. Bears are goodswimmers too. In this respect the Polar bear is the champion; apart fromtruly aquatic beasts like seals and otters, it is perhaps more at home in thewater than any other mammal. Remember, too, that the water in which itswims is always icy cold. For this reason it has very thick fur which traps theair, as insulation against the cold; it also has a thick layer of fat under itsskin, for the same purpose.
